Scottish Spina Bifida Association – the IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards 2008 Official Charity.
“As patron of the Scottish Spina Bifida Association, I am thrilled that the IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards have chosen the Association as the nominated charity for this year’s event. The Association is a very worthwhile charity and I have seen firsthand the incredible work that the family support service carries out to help families across Scotland affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Both conditions cause complex disabilities and I have met many of the children affected, and have always been amazed by their courage and determination. After a visit to their family support centre I always leave with life in perspective.

I launched the F Word Appeal to encourage the public to think of Fundraising as their favourite F word and help the Association raise the £500k required annually to run their support services and centre. They currently only receive 10K in statutory funding so any donation is always gratefully received. The support from such a high profile event is fantastic, by combining 2 things which are close to my heart (food and the Association); this event will really help the SSBA continue to make a difference to the lives of families across Scotland.”
The Scottish Spina Bifida Association has been announced as the Official Charity of the IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards 2008.
The Scottish Spina Bifida Association was founded in 1965 by a small group of enthusiastic parents who each had a child with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus. The Scottish Spina Bifida Association is currently the only charity in Scotland that is dedicated to; supporting those who suffer from spina bifida, its associated conditions and their families, and increasing public awareness and understanding of individuals with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus and allied conditions.
- The Scottish Spina Bifida Association is Scotland's voice for spina bifida, hydrocephalus and related conditions.
- Deborah Roe, Head of Fundraising for Scottish Spina Bifida Association said “We are delighted that the IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards have chosen the Association as their official charity. Every year we need to raise over £500k to enable us to provide support services to families in Scotland affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Our honorary patron, Gordon Ramsay OBE launched an appeal on our behalf ‘What’s your favourite F’ word – Gordon’s is Fundraising” to encourage the public to support us and make fundraising their favourite F Word. Such a high profile event as the IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards is a wonderful opportunity for us to raise awareness of the services that we provide and we hope that all Scottish curry lovers will embrace Gordon’s Appeal.”
The Scottish Spina Bifida Association provide a wide range of services to over 3000 children, young people and adults in Scotland whose lives have been affected by spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus. Without their family support services and lo-call helpline many people would not have access to the support they require. Every year the Scottish Spina Bifida Association’s family support workers handle over 2000 enquiries from children, young people and their families and make over 200 home visits.
In 2006 their new Family Support Centre was completed. This purpose built centre is a fantastic addition to the Association and is providing training, recreational activities and support in a family friendly environment.
The Scottish Spina Bifida Association receives less than £10,000 in government funding and to ensure they maintain the current level of services they must raise over £450,000 per annum.
Faiza Amjid, Event Manager, Oceanic Consulting said “For every major event Oceanic Consulting establishes and organises we select an official charity to raise funds for. We are thrilled that the Scottish Spina Bifida Association has agreed to be the official charity of the IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards 2008. We look forward to working with them over the upcoming months – helping to increase public awareness of Spina Bifida, its associated conditions, and the fantastic work and achievements of the Scottish Spina Bifida Association. At the awards themselves we will be hosting a charity auction in order to raise funds to donate to the Scottish Spina Bifida Association; in view of helping to maintain the sterling level of work they undertake and services they provide.”
